From Sharkhunters, International Newsletter KTB 183a

Sharkhunters, International Members have passed on this information – the giant I.J.N submarine I-401 was found by HURL (Hawaii Undersea Research) in more than 800 meters of water off the coast of Kalaeloa, HI. It makes the wreck more than a ½ mile deep.

These huge boats had watertight hangars that could carry float planes and at the end of the war, I-400 and I-401 were going to be employed against the Panama Canal to blow up the locks, thus preventing additional American ships, with planes and troops to be sent to Europe after the fall of Germany, to attack Japan-held islands in the Pacific.

It was described by some of our researchers years later that it was a foolhardy plan and one said that it was like,

rushing to put out a forest fire on the distant horizon when your own kimono is ablaze”.

These boats were taken to Hawaii for the USN to study but in 1946, the Soviet Union as one of the victorious Allies, wanted free access to them, even though they declared war against Japan just w weeks before Japan surrendered to the US.

It was decided not to allow the Soviets this access, so on 31 May 1946, five of the Secret Japanese submarines were taken to sea and sunk as torpedo targets by the American submarine USS CABEZON.
