We have sent some stories of Melvin J. Percy TM-1(SS) and
Robert C. Fischer TM-2(SS) so here are their pictures. Melvin Percy was
the ship's barber, here he is cutting Robert's hair. You can see the
after tubes pretty well also.........

You know how close quarters are in a sub, well Earnest C. Wareham
EN-1(SS) didn't have a place to hide. Ernie was in charge of the
after engine room when I went aboard, he and I stood watch
together until I made EN-3....

Ernie taught me a lot about the Diodon and about the engines and }
every thing else in the engine room. We got sea sick together, he
would set on the tool box by the ladder going topside and hold his
head, just feeling miserable. I would really get sick and loose
everything, but we kept everything going somehow......

Thanks,
Jim Barnes

This is Charles E. Cooper FN (SS), this is looking forward in the after
engine room. Notice he has on glasses, he didn't wear glasses,
I think these were mine. Charles had a pair of black plastic frames
with no lenses that he wore for most of the 1958-59 WestPac tour.
This was taken in 1959......

We were going into port someplace and the line handlers
are on deck, the guy on the left has the heaving line in his hands.
Maybe some one remembers names to go with this from 1959......

This picture was taken in Okinawa, I think, we had a leak and
got salt water in one of the generators. They brought a tanker
alongside and flushed the generator for a few hours......

1958-1959: Engine Room Crew .....

This is some of the engine room crew, Richard C. Miller EN-3(SS)
in dress blues. He worked in the forward engine room. Someone
will have to help out on the next guy standing, the one standing
on the right is Arlie B. Collins EN-2(SS) I think. He worked in the
after engine room........
Hi Jim,
Just received an e-mail from B. J. Strand, he gave me the names of
all the guys in the picture of the engine room gang in the 59 album.
Standing on left in dress blues is Richard C. Miller EN-3(SS),
George Rogers, Carl F. Goodlett EN-1(SS) kneeling and
Charles B. Matlock EN-1(SS)....

Charles E. Quimby EM-3(SS), A.L. Mclane EM-2(SS) and James W. Barnes
EN-3(SS) left Diodon early one morning for a trip to Tokyo, Japan......

We were in Yokosuka, Japan at the time. We stopped in a town I won't
even try to spell, to see the Great Buddha......

We spent some time there taking pictures and looking around
the grounds. It was like a park that was landscaped nice and
very clean. I think we rode a train part of the way and I remember
riding in a "pedicar", sort of like a rickshaw on a bicycle. It had three
wheels the passengers rode in a covered are at the back and the
driver was riding the bicycle part of it. Some of them had a small
gasoline engine attached to the front wheel so the driver didn't
have to peddle all time........

All I remember about Tokyo is we were hungry so we went into this
restaurant, sat in a booth and waited for the waitress. She could
speak no English and we could speak no Japanese. After a while
we had all the employees gathered around trying to figure out
what we wanted. Finally someone said Coke and we all agreed
that is what we wanted to drink. The food was a different story,
one of the cooks finally said "ham" and we all jumped at that,
at least we had something we knew what was.

They brought us ham sandwiches loaded with horseradish and
cut like finger sandwiches. We were grateful for anything but the
horseradish was a lot hotter than we wanted. We had a good time
and an experience we will never forget. In this picture Quimby is on
the left, McLane in the center and Barnes on the right.........

This picture was taken in Hong Kong. I guess this was in early '59.
This boat came each day to pick up garbage. One of the women had
a little boy about 5-7 years old. I had bought a model cabin cruiser
boat in Japan and put it together on the way to Hong Kong. I had
had my fun so when I saw this kid I put the boat in the top of the
engine room trash can. When they empted the can the boy grabbed
the boat and was hanging over the side sailing his little boat in
Hong Kong harbor.

This is looking forward from the bridge. We were in some pretty
good swells. This one broke over the bubble and we all ducked
under except the duty officer. He got wet and sent me below so
there would be room for him to get under the bubble and not get
wet.....

I think this is the last of my pictures...Picture is not of the Diodon
but thought you might like it, it was taken from Diodon on the day
we were leaving Pearl Harbor to return to San Diego after the WestPac
tour in 1959. These are ocean going tugs airing their flags and there
was a beautiful rainbow that morning.

San Diego, Nereus (AS-17) with Diodon & other subs
.....
I think this was taken from the water taxi on the way to "the beach".
Diodon is one of the boats but I don't remember which. The tender is
the Nereus AS-17....

This is William F. Catron, EN-2(SS) on the day he left the Diodon
for discharge. You would have to know Catron, he was the guy
that told us "don't ride a rickshaw in Hong Kong, and the first guy
I saw on the beach was Catron in a rickshaw.....

[Back home] He had his wife in Balboa Naval Hospital to give birth
to one of their children. He told the doctor to sew her up so the
wider she spread her legs the tighter it would get. The doctor threw
 him out of the hospital......
