Gitmo Memories

I don't remember Hatuey Beer. Hell, I don't remember a lot of things 36 years later, but I will always remember the "cattle cars' that would run around the base dropping off sailors at the various clubs. There was the White Hat club for E-4 & below, the Acey Ducey for E-5 & 6 in addition to the Chiefs Club & the Officers Club. There also was a dinner club with entertainment that was sort of neutral territory. Every time we went there, the act was "Lupe and Louise" Pulling Shore Patrol was awful because I always got the cattle cars with all of the drunks. I remember whenever there was a fight, one of the SP's on permanent duty would bang on the wall with his night stick & the driver would slam on the brakes causing the participants to end up in a pile which made it easier to sort them out. I spent many a night eating food out of the vending machines at the peir waiting for the liberty launch to take us back to the ship. John "JC" Collins, STG2
USS Edward McDonnell DE 1043

http://www.navetsusa.com/news.html How many Gitmo (Guantanamo Bay, Cuba) shipmates remember Hatuey beer ?
Got any sea stories about this beer? Send them to.......

Gitmo beer. My memory just kicked in again.  I believe that we used to say that "We wrestled with the One Eyed Indian last night and he won again".

Gitmo beer. "Hatuey", the One Eyed Indian? USS Bears DD-654, 1954 and 55 Fleet Training Group.  A Tincan out of Norfolk, Va. It was the last year of Liberty Parties enjoying the City of Havana. If I remember correctly we had to travel by boat to get to and from Havana.  Going  was a piece of cake, but, coming back with a boat load of intoxicated Swabbies was a different scenario.  What a sight to behold.  Some times I was the drunk and other times I was the Duty Boat Engineer bringing them to and from.  Great memories.  We were young and had "no fear".     Lloyd Hoffmeister MMCM,     US Navy Retired.  1954 to 1975.

From: BUCK  Email:  buck@kerrlake.com THE  ONLY BEER  I  CAN  THINK  OF  OUT  OF  GITMO  WAS  CALLED HOTTUEY  BEER   THAT  HAD  A  ONE  EYE  INDIAN  ON  THE
LABLE..............  I  DRANK  MY  SHARE  OF  THEM........... BUCK  SHELL

hautey the gitmo beer 1959 I WENT TO GITMO ON A SKAKEDOWN CRUISE ABOARD THE USS VULCAN AR-5. WE LEFT PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD IN AUG.1959 AND WAS THERE UNTIL NOV.1959 SO WAS ABLE TO GO TO GUANTANAMO NAVAL BASE FOR SOME LIBERTY AND GOT TO TRY THIS INFAMOUS BEER.I REMEMBER THAT ONE NITE YOU COULD DRINK SEVERAL BEERS AND NOT EVEN GET A BUZZ THEN THE VERY NEXT NITE DRINK ONE ARE TWO AND REALLY GET DRUNK. WE FOUND OUT THAT THERE WAS NO CONTROL ON THE ALCOHOL CONTENT. FRANK P. FICAROTTO MM2 USN 1957-1960

From:   Email:  Jerry Presley jerrypresley@sbcglobal.net
Hatuey Beer Hatuey had a picture of an Indian profile showing one side, and one eye.  If you drank enough of it they say the Indian would look at you with both eyes.

That meant you had better sit down on the open-sided "Cattle Car" vehicle
they used to haul drunk sailors back to the piers from the EM clubs. In 1956 there were three EM clubs on the base and mixed drinks cost 20 cents
each.  Anytime a "Tin-Can" sailor or a "Bubble-Head" went for drinks we
would buy $1.s worth at a time.  Smart sailors left the EM clubs about 1
hour before closing time.

The Navy had semi-trailer rigs which were open
sided and low to the ground so one could step on and off while it was still
moving.  These rigs drove all around the base slow enough so people could
board as it moved. At closing time of the clubs all the cattle cars were packed and fights always broke out on one end of the trailer and worked themselves to the
other end.

If you didn't get knocked off, or out, you probably got trampled
in the melee. Next morning the Sea Detail would be set at 0700 and we would
be out of the harbor and on station by 0800 to practice our anti-submarine
warfare tactics.  Whew! Some days it just wasn't very much fun until about
1600.  Then we would go back "Over" and do it all over again. Viva la Gitmo! (And the "One-Eyed Indian") Jerry Presley QM1, USS Courtney DE-1021

This e-mail is going to friends and relatives in my email address book....... Well it happened last Friday afternoon, July 22, 2005... Had to be taken to St. Lucie Medical Center in Port St. Lucie reference my pacemaker/defibrillator fired off 5 times.... I was admitted and underwent many tests...... Some of you might know what I'm talking about.........

Doctor at first said it was a mild heart attack, but changed his mind a couple of days later.... He said the cause that fired off the defibrillator was because of very fast heart beat possibly caused by stress, excessive excercise, among many other reasons..... I would guess it was stress...... I came out of the hospital this evening, Wednesday, July 27........

I want to apologize to all who sent me  emails during the time I was hospitalized......... My computer was full of emails and a few were bounced back to some of you.....Hence I have deleted all the email that I had.......... If there was something that I really need to know, please resend it....... Ya'll take care, Ole Duke   (Emilio)
