ABOUT THE WORLDWIDE MILITARY PERSONNEL DATABASE
The Online Military Personnel Database was established on 4 July 1988 (see New
York Times article dated 6 December 1988) to provide worldwide access, via
modem, on confirmation or collected information of American military service
prior to the Revolutionary War up to the present. In 1991 The Military Personnel
Database became internet accessible via secure MilNet. In 1994 The Database
became internet accessible via a secure World Wide Web interface. In 1996 The
Database expanded to collect information and confirmation on military personnel
of other nations.
The Military Personnel Database is the world's largest online archive of active,
former and deceased military personnel and family members. Names, photographs
and military information provided in the database are collected from official
and unofficial resources. Official and confirmed war service and military medal
recipients are identified by Dept of Defense reference code.
