Subject: U-853 Claims another diver
Our Member Rolf Rosellen has sent a news piece to
us that is sad, but not all that rare. A New Jersey diving instructor,
Stephen Hardick (60 years old) was diving the wreck of U-853 with three
friends when he lost consciousness. He died shortly thereafter.
Some years ago, our Member Larry Daufemia and a
friend were diving U-853 when his friend became disoriented, lost his
tanks and he also died and in his panic, almost took Larry with him.
Divers tell us that this is a "Black Water"
dive............that is, no visibility and dangerous currents. It is
not a dive to be taken lightly and even experienced divers sometimes die
on this boat.
Thanks for the news Rolf.
