The 688 from the bow is a fiberglass sonar dome then the sphere is inside the dome aft of the sphere is 3 ballast tanks 1,2,3 A and B for port and starboard. the sphere is connected by an access tunnel which has a water tight door on the end in the forward crews berthing. If the sphere flooded then its a sticky situation with little safety margin.

Also the air banks and half the O2 banks are in the forward ballast tanks. So you would have to be concerned with loss of air for the EMBT Blow system.
