PCU JIMMY CARTER (SSN 23) Underway on Alfa Trials

JIMMY CARTER got underway for their initial sea trials Tuesday morning just before noon. The ship is expected to be delivered later this year to the Navy and commissioned some time in February 2005.

In a related news item, the New Mexico Congressional delegation announced that the next VIRGINIA Class submarine will be named USS NEW MEXICO (SSN 779). She will join VIRGINIA, TEXAS, HAWAII, NORTH CAROLINA and NEW HAMPSHIRE.
