WASHINGTON During a 22 December 2004 ceremony at General Dynamics Electric Boat’s Groton, Connecticut facility, the Navy accepted delivery of PCU JIMMY CARTER (SSN-23), the third and final submarine of the SEAWOLF Class.

Delivery of JIMMY CARTER marked the latest in a series of major achievements for the submarine force in 2004.  The commissioning of USS VIRGINIA (SSN-774), the christening of TEXAS, keel layings of HAWAII and NORTH CAROLINA, and now delivery of the final and most capable ship of the SEAWOLF Class culminates a big year for submariners who also celebrated 50 years since the commissioning of USS NAUTILUS (SSN-571), the first nuclear-powered submarine.  Rear Admiral John D. Butler, the Navy’s Program Executive Officer, Submarines, noted that “with VIRGINIA and JIMMY CARTER joining the fleet, the Navy is gaining important new capabilities for fighting the Global War on Terror and meeting the nation’s security needs for decades to come.”

JIMMY CARTER will be commissioned on February 19, 2005 at Naval Submarine Base, Groton, Connecticut.
