The day the Raton almost shot down a helicopter.

Raton was doing sub detection work with helicopters when the con. ordered the forward room to load a Green FLARE from the signal gun. As I remember, we only had green, red, and yellow STARS and SMOKES, nothing called a FLARE.

So as the story goes, our first class torpedoman loaded and shot a Green STAR.

The XO was in the forward room within a minute. It seems the Green Star almost went thru the helicopter blades.

It was hush-hush story back then, but it's a laugh today.

Does anyone else remember?
