CAPT NORMAN WILLIAM SHRIVER, USN (RET)

Captain Norman William Shriver, USN (Ret.) of Ocean City, passed away Wednesday, January 28 at the Atlantic City Trauma Unit in Atlantic City, of severe head trauma after falling on ice. Son of the late Elizabeth and Randolph Shriver, he was born in Philadelphia, PA in 1934. He was a 1952 graduate of Abington High School. He then attended the University of Chattanooga, TN for two years before entering the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD, Class of 1958. Upon graduation from the Academy, his first assignment was the USS Pickaway (APA222). He completed Submarine School in 1960 and was assigned to USS Sea Robin (SS407). He also served in Chivo, Harder, and as Commanding Officer USS Tang (SS563). Shore duty included tours with Defense Intelligence Agency, Office of Naval Intelligence, Seventh Fleet Staff, Submarine Group 7 in Yokosuka, Japan, Submarine Pacific Staff in Pearl Harbor, Naval Intelligence Support Center in Washington, D.C. His late tour was Chief of Staff, Naval Base, Philadelphia. His commitment was recognized with many decorations and honors, including the Legion of Merit with gold star.

He is survived by his loving wife and soul mate of 45 years, Marilyn. In addition to a distinguished and decorated naval career, Norm was a well loved long term resident of Ocean City. He will be remembered well from his parents' restaurant, The Hen House. Many will miss his conversation and homemade donuts at Surf Buggy Center on 8th Street.

Burial at sea with full military honors will take place aboard a U.S. Navy Submarine. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Atlantic City Medical Center trauma Unit, 1925 Pacific Ave., Atlantic City, NJ 08401.
