Captain Richard "Mac" Hughes passed away on Saturday, 14 December at Fairfax Hospital after a long battle with cancer. 

Captain Hughes was a member of the Naval Academy class of 1955 and a career submariner.  He commanded the USS BILLFISH (SSN 676), Naval Nuclear Power Training Unit, Idaho Falls, Idaho, USS FULTON (AS 11), and the Submarine Refit and Training Group in La Maddalena, Italy.    

Captain Hughes is survived by his wife, Joyce, and 4 children.  Captain Hughes' son, Commander Jeff Hughes, recently completed his tour as Commanding Officer of USS WYOMING (SSBN 742) (B), and is currently serving as Commanding Officer, Naval Nuclear Power Training Unit, Ballston Spa, New York.   

The funeral service will be held on Thursday, 19 December at 1400 at the Saint Stephen's United Methodist Church in Burke, Virginia.

Burial will be on January 8th at Arlington National Cemetery.
