"Staying
Safe in the 'Drive Thru'..? "
December 23rd, 2008
I received an email from a member a few
days ago, and it went as follows:
I am a CCW permit holder, and I take owning and carrying a hand gun very
seriously. I was in the drive thru line at Micky D's this morning. My son,
C***** (who is 12 years old), asked me what kind of precautions I take while in
the line of cars at the drive thru. This is what I told him:
1) Keep your doors locked.
2) Before I place my order I look all around the vehicle. Then I roll my window
down and place my order. I then immediately roll my window back up.
3) while I am waiting in line I keep my eyes peeled.
I told him that the drive thru is a good place for a bad guy to rob people
because the bad guy knows that people have money or credit cards with them to
buy their food. Is there anything else I should have told him? The town we live
in is relatively peaceful. We have had some violent crimes and break ins in the
past, but as time goes on I know the odds are against us. It's not a matter "if"
but "when" something happens. Thank you, L******.

Friend, this is some great advice. The only thing I would add is to try to leave
enough space between you and the car in front of you for you to peel out of the
line and get out of Dodge (the city, not your vehicle ;), in case something
happens.
While this great advice applies to a 'Drive Thru' lane for fast food (or
coffee), it especially applies to ATM machines.
I usually recommend that someone doesn't even USE a drive through ATM machine,
but if you must, it is crucial that you understand that MANY robberies occur at
these things.
I have heard many stories about someone either jumping in the passenger seat of
an unlocked car with a weapon while at an ATM, or simply coming up to the
drivers window and robbing that way.
So keep you doors locked, your car in drive with your foot on the brake, and
your window closed as much and as often as possible.
It also would be a good idea to make sure you are able to gain access to your
own weapon quickly from a sitting position inside your car.
But remember- if you are able to just drive away with using your weapon in self
defense, it's not only wise to do so, but legally prudent.
