Dear Dr. Piazza,

I am a pastor with a deep love for the people of the congregation I serve. I also have a deep concern for the welfare of my church family. The church shooting in Knoxville yesterday has made my concern grave indeed.

A few years ago I met and spoke with a young man named Ben Strong who talked a 15-year-old gunman into surrendering his weapon after shooting several members of a prayer group the then 17-year-old Ben was leading in his school. Ben's courage is nothing less than amazing. Still, it bothered me to think that if Ben's courage and love were not enough to stop the young shooter more students might have died.

Ten years later, December of 2007, Stephen, the son of a good friend of mine, was present when a gunman killed Tiffany at the Youth With A Mission (YWAM) missionary training base in Arvada CO. The gunman also killed another worker at the center and wounded two others.

Tiffany was an acquaintance and co-worker of one of my parishioners who works for YWAM from her home here in PA. The gunman went on to a large church in Boulder CO where he killed two more people, wounded three others and was only stopped when a VOLUNTEER security guard at the church wounded him with several shots from her personally owned, concealed weapon.

Our church board discussed the desirability of having one or more armed people who could protect the congregation should something like this occur in our church.

The major obstacle for us all is the concern that none of us is a trained weapons expert and that we would be very likely to add to the carnage rather than preventing it if any of us were to use a handgun in the midst of our crowded sanctuary on a Sunday morning. Several of us, including myself as the Senior Pastor, have concealed carry permits and personally owned weapons. None of us has adequate training for the use of a weapon in a crowded church.

Yesterday, a brave church member in Knoxville gave his life standing between a gunman and his church family. Unfortunately, that man's courage and love did not stop the gunman. This most recent shooting in TN has sent my concern for my church family over the top.

Would any of your programs at Front Sight apply to our need?

Unfortunately, we are in the nations "rust belt" where the steel industry crashed (or rather was sold to overseas manufacturers) years ago and the area is quite depressed economically, so cost is a major factor for us. Personally, I would pay to come myself and to bring one or two of our members with me if our family income had not just been cut in half by the loss of my wife's job. Still, I'm hoping I can find some way to make something work for the protection of our church family.
