"Balancing Carry-Gun Comfort and Effectiveness..."
December 31st, 2008
Hello, James!
I wanted to write a little something about the decision those of us who carry
concealed have to make between the ease and comfort of your carry 'rig' and your
weapon's effectiveness.
But first, I want to kill a ton of birds with one stone, and answer about a
thousand questions that I've been receiving with one small, quick, web video.
The question is always "How do I customize my '2008 Year End Package' with the
USCCA special report that I want?
Here is your answer: A step by step video made by a friend of mine, on how
exactly to save HUGE on any of our reports that you'd like!

Okay, now back to the matter at hand- carry guns!
Obviously, if all guns were equally effective, we'd all drop little 2-round
.22LR derringers in our back left pockets and forget about it.
But- all guns are not equally effective. Skill and situational variables account
for a lot- yes- but all else being equal, the guy with the biggest caliber,
biggest magazine, and most reliable handgun is better off if he is forced to use
his weapon.
But- we can't all just grab a .45 ACP GLOCK with a foot-long 30-round magazine
and tuck it under our shirts!
We have to make a compromise- we have to decide which is the most effective gun
that we personally can carry, while still choosing a set up comfortable
enough to take with us regardless of wardrobe, weather, drive time, or weekend
plan.
It's not nearly as easy as it sounds, but it is a compromise that each of us has
to make for ourselves. Here are a few tips to help you find your balance faster!
1) Belt.
If you carry your gun on your belt, have you experimented with different belts?
The thickness and tallness of a belt can make a world of difference in how
comfortable your holster is.
2) Holster.
If you use a holster, be sure to try different styles, positions, and even
materials. Try leather, Nylon, and Kydex (a hard, plastic material). Slide your
holster around as well! I know a guy who carried a GLOCK at 4:00 o'clock on his
belt (assuming your belt buckle is 12 noon) for years, but discovered that
carrying at 1:00 o'clock was much more comfortable.
3) Pocket Inserts
If you carry a revolver, or an auto in your pocket, you may want to consider a
pocket insert. Concealed Carry Clothiers, LLC makes and sells these cheap little
fabric things that you stick in your pocket, and it keeps your gun upright and
secure in your pocket!
4) Custom Mods...
As a last-ditch effort, you can always have your gun customized by a gun smith.
One example of customization would be to have the handle of a full-sized GLOCK
'chopped' to accept sub-compact magazines. Since the handle of the pistol is
usually the most difficult to conceal, some people have found this action to be
helpful in reaching their 'balance'.
Well, that's about it for today. I hope you have a safe, fun, and excellent New
Year's Evening!
