"A Handgun Grip Fatal Mistake..?"

December 30th, 2008

Hello, James!

I wanted to take a second to tell you about a potentially deadly mistake a lot of people make with automatic handguns.

This mistake can cause frustrations and a lack of confidence in your gun at the range, and it could be deadly if you ever had to use your weapon in self defense.

That 'fatal mistake' is called "limp wristing".

"
Limp Wristing, 'To Limp Wrist': Verb, Failing to grip your automatic handgun tightly enough, causing the pistol to fail to extract a spent casing from the chamber."

As the above 'definition' states, 'limp wristing' results in a malfunction that will render your pistol unable to fire. In order to fix the malfunction (a jam), you'll have to remove the magazine and rack the slide.

On the range, this is just a pain in the neck. But if you were using your weapon in self defense, the seconds it would take to fix could prove to be deadly.

Why does limp-wristing cause a jam?

If you think about it, the only reason your handgun's slide operates in the first place, is because you are holding onto the bottom of the handgun. Believe it or not, if a pistol was floating in space, and you pulled the trigger with a string, the slide would not cycle.

The bullet would go flying one way, and the pistol would go flying the other! In order for the slide to cycle (ejecting the spent casing and loading the next one in line) the bottom of the pistol, the frame, must remain stationary. This is because the slide cycling depends on a spring, and a spring can't depress if there is no resistance on one end!

Now, a little bit of wiggle is okay- the normal amount of recoil you feel when you shoot.

But- if you let your handgun recoil too much in your hand, you face a pretty good chance of having your pistol jam up.

Let me stress- this isn't some thing that MAY happen. It is an exact, reproducible result that WILL happen if you follow a specific set of instructions- and all those instructions are, is that you don't hang on to your pistol tight enough.

Until today, I had never experienced a limp-wrist. I have seen LOTS of people do it, but only today did I have it happen to me...

I was shooting outdoors (It was a whole 34 degrees out! I couldn't waste that warm weather indoors!), and had kept backing up, seeing how far back I could shoot and still hit my target.

I had backed up pretty far, and began finding that the looser I held my handgun, the more accurately I hit.

So... I thought I would take it to the extreme, and I loosened my grip as much as I could, while still knowing that the gun was safe and secure in my hands.

Mind you- I was still gripping the handle relatively firmly!

I pressed the trigger, and 'BANG'. The bullet had hit the paper ALMOST dead center- what a shot!

BUT- the slide of my GLOCK was locked... or at least it appeared to be...

Upon further investigation, I realized that the slide wasn't locked at all. The spent casing was sticking half way out of the chamber, and the next round was wedged in below it. The slide couldn't close because of the angle the spent casing was jarred at.

Instantly I knew what had happened- a limp wrist!

In all the YEARS that I've owned my GLOCK, this is the very first time it has ever jammed on me. I've had a couple cheap 'target' rounds fail to fire, but I've never had my GLOCK jam. I am just glad I know that it was my fault and not the GLOCK's!

Well, that's today's tip for you! Have a great night!
